How is GPA Calculated
GPA is Graduate Point Average. In US schools a student receives a letter grade for the course he/she has taken.
To understand GPA lets take an example of a student who has taken three courses of 3 units each and scored A,A-.B
Following is the range of letter grades and the point assigned to each letter grade
LetterGrade      Points
A                      4
A-                    3.70
B+                   3.30
B                      3
B-                    2.70
C+                   2.30
C                      2
C-                    1.70
D                      1.50
F                       0
SO if the student has scored A,A- and B in 3 courses of 3 unit each then his GPAwill be as follows
(Units )3 * 4 ( A) + ( Units)3*3.70( A-) + ( Units)3*3( B) = 12 + 11.1 + 9 = 32.1
GPA = 32.1/9 = 3.56  ( 9 are the total number of units of 3 courses)
In the second semester if the student takes 3 course of 3 units then his total number of units will be 18 ( 9+9 ) and the if for example the students scores an F i.e 0 in all courses then his GPA will be 32.1/18 =  1.78.
Few Important Notes
a)  International students lose their on-campus jobs if their GPA falls below 3 and also       they can not file for GAP if their GPA is below 3
b)  Pre-requisites are not considered in GPA calculation in case of Computer Science
c)  Foundation level courses are considered in GPA calculation in case of MBA       students.Only English,Maths and Statistics are not counted as they are credit/no       credit
d)   Credit/No Credit means pass or fail. There is no letter grade and is not counted in       GPA calculation in any program.
